FL: Catering Co. Owner Shot Man In Self Defense: "A Miami catering company turned into a crime scene Monday morning after police and paramedics rushed to help a man who had been shot. The man was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, according to Miami Fire Spokesman Ignatius Carroll. The shooting occurred sometime after 9 a.m. inside Yolene Catering on the 5900 block of Northwest Second Avenue. Yolene Francois, the owner, told CBS4's Tiffani Helberg that her husband shot a man in self defense. She said the man had worked for them briefly. He allegedly came in demanding money and picked up a chair as if to strike him. That's when the owner allegedly shot the man, Francois said. Miami-Dade police say the owner who shot the former employee won't face charges because he shot in self defense. The former employee who allegedly assaulted the husband may face charges."

Florida oldster Shoots, Kills Burglar: "Lake County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a fatal shooting at a home on County Road 561 in Clermont. According to officials, the homeowner, 70-year-old Russell Conrad, was awakened by the sound of his truck’s horn early Saturday morning. When he went outside to investigate, he found a man inside his truck. Conrad fired warning shots and ordered the man out of his truck twice. When the suspect finally got out of the truck, he ran towards Conrad. Conrad told officials he was in fear for his life so shot the suspect, killing him. The suspect has been identified as 32-year-old Steve Hilson. According to officials, he lives in the same neighborhood where he was shot."

OR: Intruder shot at apartment: "A person who kicked down an apartment door was shot and injured Thursday night, Gresham police said. Officers were called at 9:11 p.m. on Thursday about someone trying to kick in Nathan Brown’s apartment door in the 1200 block of East Powell Boulevard. Brown said his 2-year-old daughter was sleeping when he heard a loud noise. ‘I heard three distinct loud bangs like someone was kicking my door. It wasn’t like a knock, it was emotionally charged. It scared me,’ Brown said.”

Gun Rights as a Defense against Tyranny: "Our naive trust in the state often causes us to overlook the primary need for gun rights: defense against an oppressive government. As Justice Antonin Scalia asserted on behalf of the majority in District of Columbia v. Heller, in which the D.C. ban on handguns was declared unconstitutional, the right to bear arms, enshrined in the Second Amendment, preserves specifically the common-law right to self defense. What is often overlooked, however, by both those who oppose and support gun rights, is that the aggressors which an armed citizen is suited to resist may include one’s own government. An armed citizenry is the last resort against oppression; the right to bear arms is the freedom from which all other freedoms flow. Naive trust of the government dominates much public sentiment in modern-day America, but a healthy distrust, even suspicion, of the government animated the writing of our Constitution, inspiring our Founding Fathers to preserve in that document the protection of the citizenry’s right to bear arms. History has borne out this observation. Genocide is almost always preceded by disarmament of the intended victims. Adolf Hitler, following the institution of strict gun control legislation in Germany in 1935, proclaimed: “This year will go down in history. For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration. Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future!”
